The classical arch became popular again, panel mouldings were simplified and walls were plain plaster or simply painted in neutral colours, such as grey. Symmetry found its place again and decorative devices came from classical figures, swags, garlands, laurel wreaths and urns. Flamboyance could still be seen in the beds where ostrich feathers adorned many a corona and the fabric of choice was the eye-boggling Toile de Jouy. (Take care when examining these fabrics as they often showed the events of the day in all their gory glory including the guillotining of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette.)
No matter which room you decide to design you will find the casual style very easy to include. The formal style uses the principle of symmetry and this is applied to the doors and windows and all aspects of the room. Also in this form of styling the furniture used is antique or something that is a close duplicate of the same. Therefore if you refer to the guide for decorating styles you will be able to understand the latest trends in decorating homes.
Adding dials and gauges can actually add function as well as form, allowing you to monitor engine oil pressure, temperature, boost, economy, voltages etc… Be sure to only add the dials you will use – less is definitely more otherwise your interior will end up looking like the inside of a 1980’s space ship in a B grade movie.
Louis XIV – In the middle of the 17th century, the king of France, Louis XIV, favoured a very grand style of interior. Furniture was heavy and finishings were fussy. Gilding was everywhere – on doors, furniture, mouldings – and yet more decoration was added with boule marquetry on furniture, (using tortoiseshell and brass) and detailed paintings on ceilings.
Second of all, place candles in every room. The long ones are very elegant when put in a beautiful metallic candlestick. In addition to ordinary furniture, such as sofas, armchairs and tables, it is excellent to have ottomans, benches, chaise lounges or poufs. They also have to be ornamental and curvy. Ideally they would be quilted, and upholstered with faux fur, velvet or plush. Needless to say, personal things need to be put aside in drawers and other places. Glamour interior does like to have excess decorations but nothing more; otherwise it will become cluttered. Such interiors are not supposed to be cozy.
Space – Space considerations are on of the more advanced concepts. From Feng Shui to traditional British style, space is something to pay attention to. Does your room feel open and free or cluttered and narrow? There is no real right or wrong when it comes to use of space, but consider having less furniture in a small room to give it a larger appearance and having more furniture in a large room to keep it from appearing open and barren are effective design concepts.
